tPA (tissue plasminogen activator) is a clot-busting drug that can significantly reduce long-term disability as a result of an ischemic stroke. But there is a catch. You must be given tPA within the first three hours after an ischemic stroke occurs. (An ischemic stroke occurs when an artery supplying blood to the brain is blocked.)

If you miss the three-hour window, you will be given the opportunity to receive investigational drugs. These are drugs that have shown promise in dissolving clots, but are not yet approved for general use. If you are eligible for an investigational drug, you will be advised of any potential side effects or risks. You or your legal representative must be able to sign a consent to receive the drug.
