The curriculum and Call schedule are structured to allow
residents opportunity for personal reflection, relaxation and rejuvenation. We
recognize the demanding nature of life in residency and encourage our residents
to "find their voice" in their roles as individuals, family, and community
members.
Our curriculum is designed around compliance with the ACGME 80 Hour Rule.
Southwest has instituted an Automated Time and Attendance System that will assist the
program in monitoring and tracking adherence to work hours.
Call Frequency
R1's During the first half of the R1 year, call averages one in
four-five depending on the number of interns in the medicine call pool. While on
OB, call is one in four and shared with FM residents from the Providence
Milwaukie program. It has been the policy of residents to bookend call for
vacation weeks, affording residents both weekends around their selected vacation
week off.
The second half of the R1 year, R1's have two 4-week
rotation blocks that consists of 2-weeks Night Float and 2-weeks Surgery.
During the 2-weeks of Night Float, R1's will have 4-weekday calls per
rotation.
R2's & R3's R2 & R3 residents cover medicine call Friday & Saturday nights as
well as Sunday day time, until relieved by nightfloat. We have opted to
bundle call by creating a Friday night-Sunday day combination and a Saturday
24-hour call. This dramatically lightens the call load for the seniors. OB
call is still one in four.
Nightfloat consists of four 4-week blocks beginning
the second half of the R2 year and continuing until the end of the first half of
the R3 year. Each block is split into 2-weeks of night float and 2-weeks of
another curriculum. Residents cover the Medicine service while on
nightfloat, as well as supervise pediatric admissions done by interns.
Each week begins on Sunday and goes through Thursday night. The shifts start at
6:30pm and end at 7:00am.

for the challenges of internship. R2s explore their changing role and the
transition to leadership. The R3 experience provides seniors the tools for
engaging in the recruitment and job search cycle.
The Portland/Vancouver Metro Area
Our metropolitan area is considered one of the "most livable" in the country.
Vancouver provides an excellent and convenient suburban environment with close
proximity to Portland, Oregon, known for its casual and comfortable urban style.
Cultural activities, the Arts, and Music are abundant. We are also located
within easy driving distance of some of the Northwest's most scenic recreational
areas. Stroll along the sandy beaches of the Pacific Ocean while admiring the
rocky shoreline of the Oregon coast. Windsurf in the Columbia River Gorge, ski
Mt. Hood, or cycle around the base Mt. St. Helens. Enjoy the vineyards of the
Yamhill and Willamette Valley wineries, or go for a relaxing hike on one of many
trails etched into the lush, green countryside. Because of our moderate climate,
there is plenty to experience and truly enjoy through all four seasons of the
year.
