Breast Surgery

"Knowing what I was dealing with was almost a relief. Once I knew what I had to do, it was just like, 'OK, I can do this.' And so the left breast was removed, and 10 days later I was in the Legislature, and I did my chemo on the weekends." —Val Ogden, Washington State representative (retired)

Your healthcare provider may recommend some combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy. Southwest's physicians, nurse navigators, nurses, physical therapists, social workers and nutritionists are uniquely qualified to help with all aspects of your cancer care and recovery. Be sure to discuss all treatment options with your healthcare provider, including risks, side effects and benefits.

A lumpectomy is a breast-conserving surgery generally done when tumors are small and confined to the breast. The tumor and a margin of surrounding tissue are removed. A mastectomy removes the entire breast.

In both procedures, some or all of the lymph nodes under the arm are removed and examined for cancer. Southwest's Lymphedema Specialty Clinic helps address problems that may arise.

Reconstructive surgery offers optimal cosmetic results. This type of procedure is commonly performed at Southwest Medical Group Plastic Surgery.
