COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY: Students Win with Free Physicals
Southwest's Family Medicine Residency program took this year's community sports physicals straight to students.
Rae Wright, MD, and clinic staff worked with leaders at the Vancouver School District to organize and advertise the event. The new system proved to be very popular as physician Residents provided free examinations to nearly 500 students at Hudson's Bay, Skyview and Fort Vancouver High Schools.
In recent years, the number of students attending the program at the clinic has dropped to a few dozen. Program planners decided it might make more sense to take the physicals to the high schools rather than close the clinic for half the day for a handful of students.
Family Medicine staff also arranged to have information available to sign up students for state supported health insurance programs when eligible. A special thanks to Fae Jackson and Nick Hoffman from the Vancouver School District for their support.
