INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE: Students Score with Health Career Scholarships

On May 14th, the Southwest Washington Medical Center Foundation presented $108,000 in scholarship awards to the winners of the 2009 Southwest Foundation Health Career Scholarship. Scholarships were awarded to 71 individuals studying healthcare careers, and included Southwest employees, Southwest volunteers, adults in the community, and high school graduating seniors.

First Independent Scholarship Winners

$100,000 of the scholarship money was funded by proceeds from sales at the two hospital gift shops. In addition, two $2,500 awards were presented by Jeanne Firstenburg of First Independent Bank. Another privately-funded scholarship of $3,000 was funded by the Sarina Slaid Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Each January, the applications are available at the Foundation Office, the Education Office, or the Volunteer Office of the Medical Center. The application can also be downloaded from the Southwest Washington Medical Center website. The deadline for receiving completed applications is early April of each year.

Southwest Foundation
The Southwest Foundation is the primary fundraising arm of the Medical Center and manages over $6 million for programs such as Healthy Steps Women & Children's Clinic, Cardiac Care, Hospice, Cancer Care, Diabetes Education and Physical Rehab. The Foundation is a separately incorporated not-for-profit organization. Its mission is to support the work of the Medical Center as it benefits the community. Therefore, it shares the same goals, namely to increase access and affordability and to work towards prevention. The Foundation raises and manages funds to support large capital needs, new programs, and services for people who might otherwise fall through the cracks. It accomplishes this by working with businesses and individuals that want to make an impact on the medical center as a vital, community resource.
