Lindsey Middlemas Wins Passport to Wellness Grand Prize

"Walking, over the years, has come to mean so much to me. I wanted my mother and one of my other fave walking buddies to join me for this photo shoot. Wiley spent more hours in a stroller than any of my other kids, quietly contemplating his existence before he'd drift off to sleep, and my mother has been there every step of the way...no pun intended." —Lindsey Middlemas (pictured here with her mother, Sally Houck, and son Wiley)

For Lindsey Middlemas, Southwest's Passport to Wellness walking program has been on the family calendar for years. Her husband (Seth), mother (Sally Houck), sisters (Whitney Morrison and Mackenzie Houck) and children (Wiley, Scout and Hunter) have all joined her, even when the babies were in a stroller. Middlemas's dedication has paid off, as she is the Grand Prize winner of a Hewlett-Packard® Photosmart Mz67v digital camera.

"My mom and I have been participating in Passport for years, striving to get all the stamps that would in turn lead us to riches and glory," Middlemas says. "It's been a tradition. My mom and I even did the Humane Society's walk on our birthdays each year in May." Rain or shine, being at Esther Short Park, going out for coffee or the Farmer's Market afterward, is all part of the experience.

"Back when the mall walks were part of Passport, my goal was to walk every week. I was really motivated to get that log of 100 miles," the 28 year old Cascade Park resident says. "The only year I couldn't do the walks was when I was pregnant and put on bed rest. I had already put the dates on our calendar. To see the walk dates and not be able to do them was so sad."

Although the Passport to Wellness program has been discontinued for 2009, Southwest Washington Medical Center will continue to sponsor featured walking events, such as the March of Dimes' March for Babies® on April 25. And Middlemas and her family plan to be there. "The best part is to get outdoors and walk together."
