"We monitor and update a database of over 24,000 cancer patients. We also act as the hospital monitor of compliance with the American College of Surgeons (ACOS) standards. All this is performed with the goal of continuing the Medical Center's vision of exceptional medicine and extraordinary care for every person." —Marie Tesdale, RHIT, CTR, Lead Cancer Registrar
Tracking the Data, Identifying Local Trends in Cancer
The Cancer Registry keeps track of every patient diagnosed with or treated for cancer at Southwest Washington Medical Center or the Regional Cancer Center. The information is confidential. While data may be used in research studies or reports, the patient's name or identifying information is never revealed.
The data collected at Southwest helps researchers compare:
- Types of cancers
- Stage at diagnosis
- Age at diagnosis
- Treatments efficacy
- Survival rates
The information is shared with a national data bank to help researchers learn more about cancer, leading to more effective care for cancer patients. The data also helps identify local trends, which could lead to isolating possible causes and the need for research funding.
