1. Consultation to supervisors and human resource specialists
An employee assistance program provides consultation to supervisors and human resource specialists. One does not have to operate a very large company to begin having difficulties with employees. These "troubled few" often demonstrate performance problems such as: tardiness, absenteeism, poor or negative attitude, personality conflicts with co-workers, difficulties with supervisors, sporadic production problems, coming to work drunk, high, or "hung over", alcohol/drug use on the premises, inappropriate behavior, angry outbursts, misappropriation of company funds, equipment, internet, etc.
Many troubled employees are individuals who have performed well in the past, began having occasional "lapses" in performance, and now have become a focus of concern for their supervisor. Many times these employees are "bringing their home to work." Personal problems they are having outside of the workplace are beginning to affect their performance in the workplace.
The job of the EAP is to work with supervisors and HR specialists to address performance issues, ideally working toward a referral of the troubled employee to the EAP for an assessment and counseling. While what happens on the employee's own time may be "none of your business", it certainly can affect your business.
