As the new century rolled around, Southwest completed:

  • A four-story parking garage on 92nd Avenue

  • A four-story medical office building to house a new musculoskeletal center, a breast care center, an ambulatory surgery department, and offices for physician clinics, including Northwest Surgical Specialists, orthopedic physicians for the Portland Trail Blazers, Portland Winter Hawks, the Portland State Athletic Department, and other teams. Northwest Surgical Specialists also operates the Rebound Sports Clinic at the Rose Quarter in Portland.

  • Expansion of the radiation oncology department, including the addition of a second linear accelerator and upgrading of radiation oncology equipment.

  • A totally new look for the new century: a new logo that took the architectural arch that has become Southwest's and made it a symbol of the breadth of services Southwest provides as well as its enduring legacy to the community it serves.

  • Expansion of the Emergency Department, adding patient rooms, observation beds, and a unique model for delivery of orthopedic care bringing the services of Rebound Orthopedics into the Emergency program.

  • Expansion of Intensive Care Unit to 24 beds, and 16-bed Cardiac Intensive and Intermediate Care unit.

  • Expansion and remodeling of Cardiac Cath labs, including an onsite observation unit

  • Automated bedside medication delivery system utilizing hand-held computers.

Southwest received approval from the State of Washington Department of Health to add 82 beds. The $115 million expansion will nearly double the footprint of the existing campus, adding an estimated 287,000 square feet for clinical and support services. The medical center will replace 224 of its existing beds during the expansion.
