PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center is pleased to announce its Regional Cancer Center has received a three-year Accreditation with Commendation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons.
A facility receives a three-year Accreditation with Commendation following an onsite evaluation during which the facility demonstrates a Commendation level of compliance with one or more standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach, and quality improvement. In addition, a facility receives a compliance rating for all other standards.
PeaceHealth Southwest’s Regional Cancer Center received a perfect score for its compliance rating, as well as all eight commendations. A commendation is awarded when an organization exceeds the standard set by the CoC.
"The accreditation honors the many unique features of the Regional Cancer Center’s program, which includes full-time social workers, dedicated dietitians, a variety of cancer support groups, ongoing patient and staff education, onsite pharmacy and research facilities," explains Jack Bunkley, Assistant Director, PeaceHealth Southwest Regional Cancer Center. "Our full spectrum of care is one of the things that truly differentiate the Medical Center’s Cancer program from others in our community."
There are currently more than 1,500 CoC-accredited cancer programs in the US and Puerto Rico, representing close to 30% of all hospitals. This 30% of hospitals diagnose and/or treat approximately 80% of all newly diagnosed cancer patients each year.
Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the CoC is a consortium
of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care. Its membership includes Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and 49 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of cancer care.
