Southwest Washington Medical Center began offering a one-year ASHP-accredited residency in pharmacy practice in July of 1996. When the program began two residents were selected each year to participate in the program. After successful completion of the third resident class the program expanded to the selection of three residents in 1999. While currently structured to meet the intent of the current ASHP Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) residency program standards , training experiences are individualized based on existing resident competencies and personal interests.

The purpose of this residency program is to develop competent clinical practitioners who have accelerated their growth beyond entry-level professional competence in direct patient care and in practice management and have further developed leadership skills that may be applied in any position and in any practice setting.

  • Apply patient care, customer service, and practice innovation skills in an integrated delivery system environment (i.e. development/ application of treatment guidelines).
  • Effective in work teams which are charged with planning activities, identifying opportunities for improvement, analyzing alternatives, implementing solutions and evaluating results.
  • Comepetent to be elegible for hire within the Southwest Pharmacy system or any other practice setting upon completion of the residency program.
  • Enhanced leadership and practice management skills to become a leader in the profession of pharmacy.
